Even More Mods That Shaped Minecraft's Modding

The grand finale of our trilogy is here - discover the last selection of legendary mods that permanently redefined the Minecraft universe.

Even More Mods That Shaped Minecraft's Modding

This is the third and final chapter of the "Mods That Shaped Minecraft's Modding" trilogy, in which we explore the origins of modding as we know it today and look back on the most outstanding projects created over the years.

In Parts 1 and 2, which you can find here: Mods That Shaped Minecraft's Modding Today, More Mods That Shaped Minecraft's Modding Today, we went through many popular mods that either gave rise to entire genres like magic with many successors, or were so influential that many other authors decided to make addons for them.
Today, we see the final selection of these mods, which have been loved by everyone over the course of years.

1. Thaumcraft

Thaumcraft is a magic mod, one of the oldest, if not the oldest, made in August of 2014, that focuses on research, wands, gauntlets, and more.

The mod offers a vast selection of features. You can use wand foci to cast effects (such as fire, ice, lightning, mining, protection, and mob control), build golems to automate tasks of any type, like farming, storage, defense, and so on. Among the rest of the fascinating additions, infusion altars let you add magical properties to items with a very satisfying animation.

To get started, you must create a wand! The first one you'll have access to is the Iron-Capped Wooden Wand. After that, you need to right-click a bookshelf with your new tool.
This will give you the Thaumonomicon, which contains all you need to know about Thaumcraft and will serve as your guide throughout your journey.

The mod adds 3 magical biomes and several new structures, including Nodes, which are important in the early game.
As you progress, you will unlock and learn how to use more items, like the Crucible, the Arcane Furnace used to distill items into their magical aspects, the Centrifuge, and finally the Infusion Altar.

Start your adventure and learn how to perform magic miracles with Thaumcraft!

2. Galacticraft

Galacticraft is a mod that lets you explore the solar system on board a spaceship.
An ancestor of modern space mods, this project is still a lot of fun to play with and offers many features to explore.

The mod introduces many blocks and mechanics to prepare your vessel. You'll need to create a launch pad, create a rocket and fuel it, prepare a parachute, and complete all requirements before launch, and don't forget your oxygen.

Galacticraft has a beautiful GUI to select which celestial body to travel to once in orbit, allowing you to select a planet in the solar system, zoom in to inspect closer, and launch.

Each new landing location is unique, giving you a fun experience as you explore your favorite planet.
Become an astronaut now with Galacticraft!

3. Not Enough Items

Not Enough Items is a quality-of-life mod to view crafting, smelting, brewing, and other types of recipes, but also introduces more features.

The inventory is reworked to offer a list of all items and blocks in the game, visible on the right side of the screen, that, when clicked, will show any recipe available to obtain them or other properties.

The Creative inventory now has many useful buttons for quick actions, like changing weather, time of day, healing, a magnet option to attract nearby items, and hotbar presets you can save and load any time.

Not Enough Items, despite not adding new items or mobs to the game, has been used tens of millions of times and has set the grounds for other mods to arise, like Just Enough Items (JEI), which expands on this mod's content.

4. Ender IO

Ender IO is a rich tech mod that has existed for several years, being created all the way back in 2013.

The mod offers many features, some of which are, to this day, some of the best solutions to tech.

The first step is to find some Bedrock and light it on fire until you start hearing popping sounds like popcorn. That means Grains of Infinity are being produced, which are necessary for the initial mod recipes.

Ender IO adds new armor, tools, and especially many machines like the Simple Powered Furnace, the Simple Alloy Smelter, with their standard counterparts requiring Capacitors, SAG Mill, and more.

However, the most noticeable addition in the mod is the approach of Conduits.

Conduits are like pipes for various functions like items, energy, fluids, etc., but with a special characteristic at the time unique to Ender IO: they could all fit in the same block, allowing you to make the combination you need for your machine setup.
There are multiple types and variants of Conduits for your needs and progression. Check them out with the rest of the Ender IO mod!

5. Sodium

Sodium is a performance optimization mod for Minecraft clients. It was created over 5 years ago, and immediately took over the modding scene with its power. Sodium surpassed its predecessor, OptiFine, on multiple levels, becoming a favorite among the community.

The mod not only affects performance, making the game over 3.2x faster than Vanilla, but fixes other rendering aspects that make the experience more enjoyable.
Sodium greatly enhances biome blending to be more consistent, smooth lighting, especially underwater, and block shading.

It is now a must-have for both complex modpacks and just casual playthroughs, as well as being the required dependency of Iris Shaders, which add Shader integration in the game.

Due to its popularity, fans have made ports of the mod for other game versions and mod loaders, such as Embeddium, and addons to make Sodium's functionality even more customizable, like Sodium Extra and Reese's Sodium Options.

6. Biomes O' Plenty

Biomes O' Plenty is a mod all about exploration. For brave adventurers, there are over 50 new biomes, flora such as unique trees, plants, and flowers waiting.

Biomes O' Plenty was made over a decade ago, back in February of 2015. Despite that, it is still one of the best picks for world generation mods out there, being loved by millions.

Not only does the Overworld receive a huge overhaul from the mod, but the other game dimensions do as well! The Nether and End have their own marvelous new environments.

Over the years, the mod has been a staple in the genre of world generation and overhaul mods. Still today, it remains strong and receives frequent updates for the latest versions of the game. It's actively maintained and has inspired compatibilities with other mods, such as the Create mod: Create O' Plenty.
