What does Waila do?
Waila (What Am I Looking At) adds a small, in-game tooltip at the top of your screen that tells you what block or entity you’re looking at, which mod it comes from, and for mods with compatibility, extra details such as fluids in tanks, furnace content and crop growth. It’s designed to be unobtrusive and extensible, with popular add-ons like Waila Harvestability and WAILA Plugins expanding what the tooltip can show.
Is Waila client-side only?
Primarily, yes. Waila is a client-side HUD; you can use it without installing it on the server. Some features (particularly things such as seeing detailed information about a block’s contents) requires Waila on the server side as well, so it is heavily recommended to install it on the server as well. However if you just want a simple overlay telling you what block you are looking at, Waila will work client side only.
How do I activate Waila?
After installing Waila (or a fork like Hwyla/Jade) and launching Minecraft, the tooltip appears when you look at a block or entity. You can toggle the overlay or open its config via keybinds (Waila’s default toggle is Numpad 1, forks may differ so check and rebind in Controls).
How do I use Waila on Fabric or modern Minecraft Versions?
The original Waila does not support newer Minecraft versions or mod loaders like Fabric, however the community has made forks such as WTHIT, Hwyla and Jade that do support new Minecraft versions and other modloaders like Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge. The forks have the same overlay and similar levels of mod compatibility so can be used to get the full Waila-like experience.
