How to find a Cave Dweller in Minecraft?
In this mod, you don't find the Cave Dweller – it finds you. To encounter it, you simply need to spend time deep underground in dark, unlit caves. The mod uses a "stalking" mechanic where the creature spawns out of sight and watches you from the shadows, slowly making its presence known through disturbing skittering sounds and heavy breathing before eventually charging.
Does the Cave Dweller take your stuff?
No. The Cave Dweller is a predatory hostile mob focused entirely on player elimination. It does not have the ability to pick up items, steal from chests, or dismantle your gear like an Enderman or certain "thief" mods. However, because it often kills you in deep, dangerous locations, retrieving your items before they despawn can be a significant challenge.
Can you kill the Cave Dweller in Minecraft?
Yes. While it is fast, terrifying, and has a high health pool (typically around 60 HP or 30 hearts), it is a mortal entity. Because of its erratic movement and ability to crawl through 1x1 gaps and climb, the most effective way to kill it would probably be to trap it inside lava which will slow them down and allow you to shoot arrows at them.
What are the conditions for the Cave Dweller to spawn?
The Cave Dweller follows specific spawning logic to maximize the "scare" factor:
- Location: It only spawns in the "Deep Dark" or deep underground (usually below Y=0).
- Light level: It requires a light level of 0 to spawn.

Can the Cave Dweller go to the surface?
Yes, but it prefers the dark and by default the Cave Dweller is programmed to stay underground. However, if it is already chasing you, it can follow you all the way to the surface. In many versions of the mod, if you repeatedly run to the surface to escape, the Dweller will eventually become enraged. Once enraged, it will ignore its fear of the surface and sunlight, pursuing you relentlessly until either you or it is dead.
Does the Cave Dweller spawn in peaceful mode?
Yes! However, even though it will make the same unnerving sounds, it will not be hostile towards you.
