Shears are a small tool, but they unlock a lot of useful survival tasks once you start working with wool, leaves, vines, cobwebs, and bee nests. They are especially helpful early on because they let you collect materials without wasting mobs or breaking decorative blocks the wrong way.
This guide covers how to make shears in Minecraft, what they are used for, how durability and repairs work, which enchantments are worth using, and a few mods that expand nearby shears-related gameplay.
How to Craft Shears
- Materials needed: 2 iron ingots
Place the two iron ingots diagonally in the inventory crafting grid – one in the top-left slot and one in the bottom-right slot, or one in the top-right slot and one in the bottom-left. Both diagonal orientations work. If you're using a crafting table, the same small diagonal pattern can sit anywhere inside the larger grid.
- Output: 1 pair of shears
You can craft these directly from your inventory crafting grid without opening a crafting table. Since shears are one of the first useful iron tools you'll want in survival, being able to craft them in your inventory without setting up a table first is a small but welcome convenience.
How to Get Iron Ingots
Mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe or better – a wooden pickaxe won't work on iron. Raw iron drops from iron ore, which generates across several Overworld height ranges, including underground areas and high mountain terrain. Once you have raw iron, smelt it in a furnace using any fuel. One raw iron produces one iron ingot – you need two.
What Shears Are Used For
Shears are a precision harvesting tool. They don't deal useful combat damage, but they're the correct tool for a specific set of jobs that no other item can handle the same way.
- Sheep shearing is the main early-game use. Right-click a sheep while holding shears to clip its wool. You get 1 to 3 wool of that sheep's color without killing it. The sheep regrows wool after eating grass, so one sheep with shears becomes a renewable wool supply – compared to killing a sheep which gives you just 1 wool and then nothing.
- Leaf blocks: shears let you pick up the actual leaf block, which is useful for decoration and landscaping builds. Without shears, leaves do not drop themselves. They may instead drop normal leaf loot like saplings, sticks, or apples depending on the leaf type.
- Cobwebs: a sword breaks cobwebs quickly but only drops strings. Shears break cobwebs and drop the cobweb block itself, which you need for decoration or traps.
- Vines: shears let you harvest vine items for use elsewhere. In Java Edition, using shears on the growing tip of cave vines, kelp, twisting vines, or weeping vines also stops further growth, which is useful for controlling plant spread in builds.
- Honeycomb: when a bee nest or beehive reaches honey level 5, it drips visibly. Shear it to collect 3 honeycomb and reset the honey level back to 0. Always place a campfire directly under the nest or hive before shearing – without one, the bees become hostile the moment you collect the honeycomb.
- Dispensers can hold shears and use them automatically on valid targets including full bee nests and beehives, which is how automated honeycomb farms work.
Shears vs Other Tools
For leaves, shears are the easiest early way to collect the leaf block itself, while other normal tools only give leaf loot like saplings, sticks, or apples. For cobwebs, the choice is shears for the block or a sword for strings. For vines, shears are the reliable way to harvest them as items. For wool, shears are clearly better than killing sheep if you want a renewable supply.
The one thing shears don't do well is general combat. Their attack damage is low and there's no reason to use them as a weapon in normal play.
Durability, Repairs, and Enchantments
Shears have 238 points of durability. They lose 1 durability per use – whether shearing a sheep, breaking a leaf block, or collecting honeycomb. That sounds like a lot, but 238 uses evaporate quickly if you're clearing large leaf canopies or running a busy honeycomb farm.
Some Repair Options
The cleanest method is an anvil, which can combine two shears while preserving enchantments. One pair repairs another – iron ingots don't work for anvil repairs on shears.
A grindstone also repairs by combining two shears but removes enchantments in the process.
Grid-crafting two damaged shears together repairs them but loses any enchantments, so that's only useful for unenchanted gear.
If you have the Mending enchantment, any XP orbs you collect repair the shears automatically, which is the most sustainable long-term option.
Best Enchantments for Shears
- Unbreaking III reduces durability loss per use and is the most important enchantment for shears if you do any volume of leaf clearing, vine harvesting, or honeycomb collecting.
- Mending repairs with XP and pairs well with Unbreaking to make a pair of shears last indefinitely with normal play.
- Efficiency V speeds up block-breaking and is worth adding if you spend significant time clearing large areas of leaves, cobwebs, or other shear-harvested blocks.
Note: Silk Touch is not a Java Edition shears enchantment in vanilla – it's Bedrock-only for shears. If a guide says otherwise, it's either talking about Bedrock, commands, or mods.
Where to Find Shears Without Crafting
If you'd rather not craft them, two vanilla options exist. In Java Edition, a novice shepherd villager has a 40% chance to sell shears for 2 emeralds. In Bedrock Edition, that trade is always offered. Shepherd chest loot in villages also has a 12.3% chance of containing shears.
Mods That Work Well with Shears
Vanilla shears already cover the basics: wool, leaves, vines, cobwebs, and honeycomb. These mods stay close to that same gameplay loop – one gives you earlier access to shears, while the other makes leaf cleanup faster when you are not collecting leaves for building.
SnapShears
“SnapShears” enhances shears by allowing players to harvest an entire area at once instead of individually right-clicking everything at range. This is done by jumping right before using the shears and is especially useful for people that tend to harvest a lot.
Wooden Shears
“Wooden Shears” adds a craftable pair of shears that you can make before you have iron. Two planks placed in the same diagonal pattern as the vanilla recipe gives you a wooden pair with 50 durability – enough for early-game wool gathering or light leaf clearing when your first iron is needed elsewhere. The durability value is configurable through the mod's settings.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes
The shears recipe isn't working
Make sure you're placing the ingots diagonally, not side by side or vertically. One ingot in the upper-left and one in the lower-right does the trick. One in the upper-right and one in the lower-left also works. Two in the same row or column does not, however. Also confirm you're using iron ingots as well – not raw iron, iron nuggets, or iron blocks.
The bee nest won't give honeycomb when sheared
The nest needs to be at honey level 5. Check for honey dripping from the underside of the block – if it isn't dripping, it isn't full yet. Bees need to complete several trips to fill a nest and the rate depends on how many bees are actively working it. If no bees are visiting, check that flowers are nearby and that nothing is blocking their path.
Shearing the bee nest is making the bees hostile
You need a campfire directly under the nest or hive before shearing. The smoke pacifies the bees during collection. If you forgot the campfire, step back immediately and wait for the aggro to drop before trying again. Don't run as doing so will just extend the aggro radius.
My shear broke faster than expected
While 238 uses may feel like a lot, wait until you're harvesting a large forest or running a bee farm that shears frequently! Add Unbreaking III through an anvil with an enchanted book to significantly extend its lifespan, and pair this with Mending if you have reliable XP income.
I can't repair my shear with iron ingots on the anvil
Shears repair with other shears on an anvil, not with iron ingots. Put two shears into the anvil together to combine their durability. If you have enchantments you want to keep, use the anvil. If not, a grindstone is cheaper.
My game crashes after adding a new mod
Check the Minecraft version, mod loader, and required dependency mods first. A Forge file will not work in a Fabric profile, and a mod made for one Minecraft version can crash on another.
Open the mod's Files page, make sure the downloaded file matches your exact game version and loader, then check the "Relations" or "Requirements" section for any library mods it needs. If the game still crashes, remove the newest mod you added and launch again to confirm whether that mod caused the problem.
