Minecraft: The Mounts of Mayhem Update

A review of Minecraft versions: 1.21.11 (Java), 1.21.130 (Bedrock)

Minecraft: The Mounts of Mayhem Update

On December 9th, 2025, Minecraft 1.21.11 was released.
Mounts of Mayhem revolutionized exploration and combat, bringing exciting new features to the game.
Without hesitation, let’s dive into what makes this update so great.

The Nautilus

The Nautilus is a new aquatic mob that swims around the ocean protected by a shell.

The creature is neutral and will ignore the player unless provoked, at which point it will attack with a Dash.

It can be tamed with pufferfish and ridden with a saddle, granting the new "Breath of the Nautilus" effect, allowing the player to breathe underwater while mounted.

The speed is generally slower than a boat's, but by using the Nautilus’ Dash ability, the movement becomes even faster.

The Nautilus has two variants:

  • The Zombie Nautilus, 10% faster than the regular version, can spawn ridden by a Drowned armed with a Trident, becoming hostile.
  • The Coral Zombie Nautilus, with the same qualities as the Zombie Nautilus, which spawns in the Warm Ocean biome.

Great for underwater exploration and building! No more having to brew water-breathing potions or drain the water; unlimited oxygen and fast transportation are finally here.

Nautilus Armor

We talked about how the Nautilus can be tamed, and it can be protected as well.

1.21.11 introduced Nautilus armor, which, like horse armor, allows you to keep your beloved pet safe from danger.

Available for all ores such as copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite, it can be found in Buried Treasures, Ocean Ruins, and Shipwrecks.

The armor has a beautiful design that covers the entire animal’s shell, maintaining its shape and pattern.

The Parched

The Parched is a new Skeleton variant that spawns in Deserts, similarly to the Husk. In fact, it does not spawn in caves, but is limited to the surface during the night. Beware, though: it does not burn under sunlight.

This monster shoots arrows of weakness, even if at a lower rate, turning into a serious threat in the early game.

Lucky for you, taking down these menaces is slightly easier than classic Skeletons, since they have two fewer hearts.

The Spear

Perhaps the most revolutionary addition of this update, the Spear is a new type of weapon available in wood, stone, iron, diamond, and netherite variants with unique ways to attack.

The Spear has by far the highest reach among all of Minecraft’s equipment and has two ways to deal damage: Jabbing and Charging.

The Jab attack is a low damage attack that deals knockback but can hit multiple targets, and has a cooldown based on the material tier.

Charging, however, requires the player to hold the left mouse button to start the attack sequence, which is divided into three phases:

  • Engaged, where the Spear deals damage and knockback based on the player’s velocity and can dismount enemies.
  • Tired, where the weapon starts shaking and loses the ability to dismount.
  • Disengaged, at which point only small damage can be dealt.

The Spear has its own enchantment, Lunge! It can reach level three and allows the player to dash forward while jabbing at the cost of a few hunger points, similarly to jumping and sprinting.

The Minecraft community has been asking for an update to the PvP combat system for a long time, and with the addition of the Mace and the Spear, Mojang has been hard at work providing unique ways to fight.

Camel Husk

Camels have a new, undead, and dangerous variant!

It spawns in the Desert with two riders: A Husk wielding a Spear and a Parched.

It doesn’t burn under direct sunlight, and can be ridden when the riding enemies are slain, but cannot be tamed or bred!

They can, however, be healed using their favorite food, Rabbit Feet.

The Desert biome is finally getting well-deserved updates!

After Archeology and Mounts of Mayhem, it’s a valuable location worth exploring, but keep out of danger!

Zombie Horse

The Zombie Horse, which until now did not exist in survival mode but was only available in creative, now spawns in the world!

In the darkness, the Zombie Horse can now appear just like any other undead mob, and is mounted by a Zombie wielding a Spear.

Once the monster on top is slain, the horse becomes entirely peaceful toward the player and can be tamed and ridden just like a regular horse.

However, Zombie Horses burn under sunlight! You can protect your horse with Horse Armor, which, in this update, has received a netherite variant.

It’s great to see older mobs being revisited and given a purpose in the game, and even nicer that Mojang is listening to players’ feedback about what to add to Minecraft.

Deobfuscation

1.21.11 is the first version of the game to have its code deobfuscated, which means no longer hiding the classes and methods, making reading vanilla code much easier.

This detail is relevant for Mod developers, as it eases the process of researching how the game works, which was previously masked and made unreadable without community-made mappings.

Even more crucially, Mojang recognizes the importance of mods for players and is trying to make the job easier for Mod developers to create them. We might see more tools in the future to simplify the process.

What’s planned next?

After Minecraft 1.21.11, the version number will change to start with the year, meaning the next game release will be 26.1.

Snapshots for the in-progress update are already available, and Mojang has made some important changes.

Baby Mobs Remodels

Baby mobs, including creatures and monsters, have gotten a huge overhaul!

They are now tinier, with cuter eyes, and resemble their real-life counterparts rather than a shrunk version of their parent.

The new baby models have been greatly appreciated by the community so far for their cuteness and offspring's appearance. What do you think?

Golden Dandelion

Since players liked the new baby models so much, Mojang has decided to add a new flower called the Golden Dandelion, which when fed to a creature pauses their aging, making them stay tiny forever!

It can’t be found and needs to be crafted or traded for with a Wandering Trader.

New Rendering API

More on the technical side, the game developers have been trying to implement Vibrant Visuals, the Bedrock Edition built-in shaders, into Java Edition.

They’ve optimized the game's rendering before, but they’ve realized it’s not gonna be easy until an important change is made.

This is why they recently announced a change from OpenGL, their current rendering API, to Vulkan, a newer, faster alternative.

There are a couple of reasons for this, including the fact that OpenGL stopped receiving updates over a decade ago and will soon be dropped on macOS devices.

What this means for players is that we might soon see the game’s performance triple or even quadruple as updates with this new experimental system roll out, and Vibrant Visuals will be added faster.

There are just two main downsides: older devices that don't support Vulkan and Mod developers needing to adapt their mods to the new rendering system, which might take more than a casual update.

Overall, this is a fantastic change, making Java Edition more optimized and bringing it closer to Bedrock Edition in terms of features.
