Axolotls are one of Minecraft’s more unusual aquatic mobs. They live deep underground, come in several colors, and need a little more setup than most animals before you can breed them.In this guide, we’ll go over where to find axolotls, what item breeds them, how baby colors work, and how to keep your new axolotls safe after they spawn, alongside a few useful mods.
Where Can You Find Axolotls?
Axolotls only spawn in lush caves – the leafy underground biome with drip leaves, glow berries, and hanging moss. They don't appear in rivers, oceans, or regular caves. To spot them, look for the surface signs of a lush cave below: azalea trees and moss patches often grow above them. Listen for their distinctive gurgling sounds once you're underground.
When you find a lush cave pool, check for clay below the water. Axolotls spawn underwater in lush caves when there is a clay block less than five blocks below the spawning space. If you're seeing only tropical fish with no axolotls, move to another pool or another part of the cave system.
Axolotls come in five color variants: leucistic (pink), wild (brown), gold, cyan, and the extremely rare blue. All spawn naturally in lush caves except the blue variant, which only appears through breeding.
How to Get Tropical Fish for Your Axolotls?
Tropical fish are the only food axolotls respond to. The specific item you need is a bucket of tropical fish – not a tropical fish item, not raw cod, and not any other fish. You catch them by right-clicking a tropical fish in the water while holding an empty bucket. They spawn in warm and lukewarm ocean biomes, mangrove swamps, and lush caves, though warm ocean areas are usually the easiest place to collect several buckets quickly.
Tip: Bring at least two buckets (one per adult axolotl) when you go to breed.
How to Breed Axolotls Step by Step
The axolotl breeding loop is simple:
- Step 1: Find two adult axolotls in the same area and hold a bucket of tropical fish.
- Step 2: Right-click one axolotl with the bucket. Hearts will appear over it to confirm it has entered love mode.
- Step 3: Right-click the second axolotl the same way. Both will need to enter love mode within a short window.
- Step 4: A baby axolotl will spawn immediately in the water nearby. You'll also get between 1 to 7 XP (assigned randomly) from the breeding.
After breeding, each adult enters a cooldown before it can breed again. On Java Edition, that's 5 minutes. On Bedrock Edition, it's 1 minute.
How Do Baby Axolotls and Colors Work?
Each baby usually inherits the color of one parent at random. There is also a 1 in 1200 chance that the baby gets the rare blue mutation instead, which is the only way to obtain a blue axolotl in vanilla survival.
Baby axolotls grow into adults in 20 minutes of real time. You can speed this up by feeding the baby more buckets of tropical fish – each one reduces the remaining growth time by 10%.
Note: Baby axolotls need to stay close to water. Axolotls can survive briefly on land, but they die after about 5 minutes out of water, so we recommend keeping the breeding area enclosed and giving them a safe pool to return to.
What Makes Axolotls Useful
Besides being cute to look at, you can use these tiny amphibians for three main things.
- Ocean temple runs: axolotls fight drowned, guardians, and elder guardians. Carrying a few in buckets and releasing them inside an ocean monument makes the elder guardian fight significantly easier. On Java Edition, fighting alongside axolotls can grant Regeneration I for 5 seconds per axolotl involved, up to 2 minutes total.
- Mining Fatigue removal: when you kill a mob that is in combat with an axolotl, it can lift the Mining Fatigue penalty. This is one of the most practical reasons to release axolotls during ocean monument raids, especially when guardians and elder guardians are nearby.
Tip: Build your axolotl breeding pool at least 2 blocks deep and keep it enclosed with walls, glass, or fences. Axolotls can wander onto land, and they need nearby 2-block-deep water to path back safely, so a deeper contained pool will help keep babies from getting stuck or dying outside of water.
Key Java vs. Bedrock Differences to Know
First, the good news: the breeding mechanic, food item, and color inheritance are the same on both editions.
The main difference is in the breeding cooldown – 5 minutes on Java Edition and just 1 minute on Bedrock Edition. In combat, axolotls can still help fight drowned, guardians, elder guardians, and most other aquatic mobs. On Java Edition, however, fighting alongside axolotls can also grant you Regeneration I for 5 seconds per axolotl in the fight, up to 2 minutes total. Mining Fatigue can also be removed when you kill a mob that is in combat with an axolotl.
Mods That Work Well With Axolotls
Once you have a few axolotls, the fun part is giving them a better home than a plain cave pool. These mods help turn that setup into a fuller aquatic build, with new water creatures, richer fishing, in-game breeding info, and proper tanks for displaying the axolotls you raise.
Aquaculture 2
“Aquaculture 2” makes Minecraft’s rivers, ponds, and oceans feel much fuller. It adds over 30 biome-specific fish, so freshwater, arid, arctic ocean, saltwater, jungle, swamp, and mushroom island areas all have different catches and fish mobs swimming around. This gives water-focused bases more life, especially if you are already building pools, tanks, or cave habitats for axolotls.
The mod also expands the fishing side of aquatic gameplay with new rods, hooks, bait, custom lines, bobbers, and a tackle box for storing fishing gear. Caught fish can be turned into fillets, while fishing can also pull up extra finds like driftwood, lockboxes, treasure chests, messages in bottles, and Neptune’s Bounty.
Just Enough Breeding
“Just Enough Breeding (JEB)” adds mob breeding information directly into recipe viewer mods like “JEI”, “REI”, or “EMI”. Instead of guessing which item a mob needs, you can look up its breeding entry and see the required food right inside the recipe viewer. For axolotls, this makes it easier to confirm that the correct item is a bucket of tropical fish and not a loose tropical fish item.
The mod also shows the mob’s spawn egg for quick lookup, displays how many eggs are produced for mobs that lay eggs after breeding, and marks mobs that need to be tamed before breeding. It is a simple but useful pick if you are using several animal or aquatic mods, since it keeps breeding requirements easy to check in-game.
Hybrid Aquatic
“Hybrid Aquatic” expands Minecraft’s underwater world with new creatures, blocks, items, and biome features. The mod adds marine life like new fish, sharks, crustaceans, critters, otters, nautiluses, and a miniboss, so oceans, rivers, swamps, and underwater caves can all feel much busier than they currently do in vanilla Minecraft.
For an axolotl-focused build, this makes aquatic exploration and aquarium-style bases feel more alive. It does not directly replace vanilla axolotl breeding, but it gives your underwater areas more creatures to discover around your axolotl pools. The mod also adds diving armor, sea sponges, fishing hooks, crates, anemones, and new coral types, which fit well if you are building a larger aquatic base or ocean-themed display area.
Better Fishtanks
“Better Fishtanks” is great if you want to show off the axolotls you bred instead of keeping them in a plain pool. You can catch an axolotl with a fish bag, place it into a fishtank, and build a cleaner aquarium display for your base. The tanks can also be decorated with stones, branches, coral-style pieces, shipwreck parts, and other aquatic details, so each axolotl display can feel more like a real habitat.
The mod also gives the tanks a bit of upkeep and progression. You can use feeding systems and food containers to keep fish supplied without manually feeding them every day, while passive fish egg production adds a small reward loop for maintaining your aquarium.
The introduced aquarist table handles fish-keeping recipes and supplies, and the aquarist villager can trade rare fish eggs and exclusive decorations. If you use “JEI”, the mod also supports recipe lookup, and you can also connect larger setups with pipes or item transfer systems for easier automation.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes
I can't find axolotls anywhere
You need to be in a lush cave specifically – not a regular cave or river. Look on the surface for azalea trees and moss patches, which grow above lush caves. Once underground, find pools where the cave has drip leaves and glow berries nearby. Axolotls spawn underwater in lush caves when there is a clay block less than five blocks below the spawning space. If a cave pool has no clay nearby, axolotls are unlikely to spawn there even if the biome is right.
Feeding my axolotls tropical fish didn't work
Check that you're using a bucket of tropical fish and not raw tropical fish items. A bucket of tropical fish is collected by right-clicking a tropical fish in ocean water while holding an empty bucket, while raw tropical fish items don't trigger axolotl breeding. Make sure to also confirm that both adults have been fed, otherwise they won’t enter love mode.
My baby axolotl isn't growing
Baby axolotls grow in 20 real-time minutes regardless of what you do, unless you actively feed them buckets of tropical fish to reduce the timer. Make sure the baby has enough water nearby and cannot wander away from the breeding area – while axolotls can survive briefly on land, they die after about 5 minutes being out of water. A deeper pool is our recommended approach here because axolotls pathfind back to water that is at least 2 blocks deep.
I can't get a blue axolotl despite breeding them many times
The blue variant has a 1 in 1200 chance per baby – that's genuinely rare and requires a lot of breeding attempts. Each breeding gives an independent 1/1200 chance, so there's no shortcut – simply keep on breeding axolotls and the blue variant will eventually appear. In creative or test worlds, commands are the cleanest way to spawn one directly if you just want to see it.
Hybrid Aquatic creatures aren't spawning
The mod adds creatures to existing ocean and aquatic biomes, but not to custom biomes. Make sure you're in vanilla ocean biome types – sharks appear in deep oceans, sea otters in cold oceans, and so on. Additionally, the creatures only generate in newly loaded chunks, so make sure to explore beyond your current mapped area for a chance to encounter them in the wild.
My game crashes on startup after installing mods
A startup crash usually means one of three things:
- The mod file does not match your Minecraft version.
- The mod was made for a different loader.
- A required dependency is missing.
Check that you installed the correct Forge, Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge file for your profile, then look at the mod page for any required files, especially for Fabric API on Fabric profiles and for Quilted Fabric API on Quilt profiles.
Note that Minecraft mod loaders are separate systems, so a Fabric file will not work in a Forge profile, with the same also applying to NeoForge or Quilt builds.
