What Do Llamas Eat in Minecraft?

Find out what llamas eat in Minecraft, how feeding works for taming and breeding, and what mods can make managing a llama farm easier.

What Do Llamas Eat in Minecraft?

Llamas are one of the more practical animals in Minecraft. Once tamed, they can carry storage, travel in caravans, and help move items across the world, which makes them surprisingly useful if you spend a lot of time exploring or setting up long-term survival bases.

To get the most out of them, though, it helps to understand how their feeding works – especially for taming, breeding, and raising baby llamas.

What Do Llamas Eat?

Llamas only eat wheat and hay bales. Nothing else works – not carrots, not seeds, not apples. If you right-click a llama while holding anything other than those two items, you'll just mount it instead of feeding it.

Each food serves a different purpose:

  • Wheat: heals 2 hearts and adds 3 temper points, which helps during taming. It also speeds up a baby llama's growth time by 10 seconds per piece.
  • Hay bales: heals 10 hearts, adds 6 temper points, and are the only item that puts adult tamed llamas into breeding mode. Each hay bale trims a baby llama's growth time by 1 minute and 30 seconds.

How Does Feeding Work?

Hold the food in your hand and right-click on the llama. A llama only accepts food when feeding would have an effect – healing damage, speeding up growth if it is a baby, increasing temper if it is untamed, or triggering breeding if it is a tamed adult being fed a hay bale. If feeding the animal won’t result in anything, a right click lets you mount the llama instead.

That's one of the trickier things about llamas. The game doesn't tell you why the food was refused – it just mounts you right on top. So, if you're trying to feed a llama and keep getting mounted instead, check whether it actually needs anything at the moment.

How to Tame a Llama

Taming a llama doesn't involve giving it food directly. Instead, you tame it by mounting it empty-handed and getting bucked off repeatedly. Each failed attempt raises its temper by 5 points, and once the temper hits 100, the llama accepts you and hearts will appear.

Where food comes in: feeding a llama wheat or a hay bale raises its temper, too. So if you're struggling to tame a particularly stubborn llama, feeding it a few pieces of wheat before mounting can speed up the process.

How to Breed Llamas

Only hay bales trigger breeding – wheat won't do it. Both llamas also need to be adults and already tamed before entering love mode. Feed both of them with a hay bale and hearts should appear above them. Eventually, they will move together and produce a baby llama.

Trader llamas behave the same way for feeding and breeding once they are tamed. Like normal llamas, adult llamas tamed by a trader can be bred with hay bales.

Note: If you're trying to breed two llamas but nothing happens, the most likely causes are that one of them is still untamed, or that one is still a baby.

How to Speed Up a Baby Llama’s Growth

Baby llamas take about 20 real life minutes to grow into adults on their own. Feeding them speeds this up:

  • Each piece of wheat shaves 10 seconds off the remaining time.
  • Each hay bale shaves 1 minute 30 seconds off the remaining time.

Tip: If you want to grow a baby llama quickly, hay bales are the more efficient choice. A few of them in a row makes a noticeable difference, especially early in the growth timer.

What to Do With Llamas Once They're Tamed

Tamed llamas are very useful as they can carry chests. The amount of storage you get depends on the llama's strength stat, which ranges from 1 to 5 and determines how many inventory slots it gets – from 3 slots at strength 1 up to 15 at strength 5. You cannot see the strength value directly, but you can check it once a chest is equipped by opening the llama's inventory.

You can also put a carpet on a tamed llama to give it a decorative saddle cloth. The carpet color does not change anything mechanically, but it does show when the llama is part of a caravan. Llamas form caravans when one is leashed – up to 9 nearby llamas can follow in a chain, for a caravan of up to 10 in total.

On Llama Colors and Babies

When two llamas breed, the baby takes on one parent's coat color at random. Llama colors do not mix or blend.

The strength stat works differently. The baby llama's strength is chosen from a range based on the stronger parent, with a small chance for the result to be one level higher, capped at 5. Breeding stronger llamas improves your odds of getting better storage capacity over time.

Mods That Work Well with Llamas

If you want feeding and managing a llama herd to be less hands-on, these mods are worth checking out.

Just Enough Breeding

Just Enough Breeding Mod

Just Enough Breeding is a JEI, REI, and EMI plugin that adds breeding information for mobs to your recipe viewer. It shows which items a mob needs to breed, displays the mob’s spawn egg for quick lookup, shows egg counts for mobs that lay eggs after breeding, and marks mobs that must be tamed first before breeding.

It works as an in-game reference mod rather than a feeding or farming overhaul. Instead of guessing or checking external sources, you can open your recipe viewer and see all breeding requirements in one spot.

Animal Feeding Trough

Animal Feeding Trough Mod

Animal Feeding Trough adds a feeding trough that nearby mobs can use on their own if it contains a food item they are attracted to. The mod makes animals behave as if the player fed them directly, including entering love mode and breeding when the normal conditions are met.

For llamas, that means you can stock the trough with llama food (haybale) and let nearby llamas handle feeding automatically instead of right-clicking each one by hand.

Feeding Indicators

Feeding Indicators Mod

Feeding Indicators adds floating item icons above animals so you can see what they eat and when they are ready to breed or be tamed. When you hold the correct food, the icon appears above eligible animals, and the indicators only show for adults that are not currently on a breeding cooldown.

For llamas, that makes it easier to tell when wheat or hay bales are relevant without checking outside the game. The mod also has a diet mode where you can crouch and look at an animal to cycle through every item it can eat, including support for modded animals. Using Mod Menu, you can also adjust the icon size and height or disable the mod entirely.

How to Install Minecraft Mods

You can install the above mods automatically using the CurseForge app or manually by placing the mod files within your game's mods folder. Both methods allow you to easily add custom features and enhancements into your vanilla Minecraft experience.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes

Right-clicking a llama with food just mounts it instead

This means that the llama does not need anything at the moment. Llamas only accept food when feeding would have an effect – healing damage, speeding up growth, increasing temper if untamed, or triggering breeding with a hay bale on a tamed adult. If none of those apply, right-clicking mounts the llama instead.

You’re feeding your llama wheat but it won't enter love mode

Wheat doesn't trigger breeding – only hay bales do, and both llamas need to be tamed adults for this to happen. If one is still untamed or still a baby, feeding won't produce a pairing no matter how many hay bales you use.

Giving food doesn’t make your baby llama grow faster

Check that you're feeding the baby and not an adult nearby. Right-clicking doesn't always target the mob you think it does in a crowded pen. Also note that each piece only shaves off a fixed time amount – 10 seconds for wheat, 90 seconds for hay – so the visible growth effect is small per feed, but adds up quickly if you use several hay bales in a row.

Your mod doesn't load or show in-game

Match the mod file to your exact Minecraft version and mod loader, then double-check any required dependencies on the mod’s CurseForge page. The wrong loader, wrong version, or a missing dependency can stop the mod from loading correctly.
