Top Sword Enchantments in Minecraft

A good sword in Minecraft is not just about the material it is made from. Once you start enchanting, the same diamond or netherite sword can feel completely different depending on whether it is built for everyday survival, mob farming, boss fights, or clearing groups.

The tricky part is that not every strong enchantment belongs on the same sword. Some compete with each other, some only shine against certain mobs, and a few depend on the game edition you play (Java or Bedrock).

In this guide, we break down the useful options and look at a couple of mods that push sword combat beyond what the vanilla experience offers.

A Look at the Core Sword Enchantments

  • Sharpness increases melee damage against all mob types. It's the default damage enchantment for any general-use sword and the safest pick for survival where you'd be fighting a variety of mobs.
  • Smite increases damage specifically against the undead – zombies, skeletons, drowned, phantoms, wither skeletons, and the Wither boss. It deals significantly more damage than Sharpness against those targets, but does nothing extra against everything else.
  • Sharpness and Smite are mutually exclusive, so you can only have one per sword. We suggest keeping a Smite sword if you run undead farms or fight the Wither frequently – otherwise Sharpness covers more ground.
  • Bane of Arthropods boosts damage against spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, and endermites. It also applies Slowness to those targets on hit. Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are all incompatible with each other. Bane is the most niche of the three – only worth using if you're specifically farming cave spiders or have a spider spawner set up.
  • Looting is one of the most valuable enchantments in the game for survival. It increases the quantity of item drops from kills – more blaze rods from blazes, a better chance at wither skeleton skulls, more drops from endermen, and higher rare drop rates across the board. We encourage you to always have Looting on your main combat sword.
  • Unbreaking reduces durability loss per use. It effectively prolongs the sword's lifespan and pairs well with Mending to create a sword that barely needs maintenance.
  • Mending repairs the sword using XP orbs you collect during normal play. Combined with Unbreaking, your sword can become practically permanent as long as you're earning any XP. It's the single most important endgame enchantment for a daily-use weapon.
  • Fire Aspect sets mobs on fire on hit, dealing extra damage over time and automatically cooking meat drops – cooked pork, cooked beef, and mutton drop pre-cooked instead of raw when you kill animals using this enchantment. This makes it a useful passive bonus, especially for food farming. Note, however, that the Fire Aspect doesn't apply to the secondary targets hit by a sweep attack.
  • Sweeping Edge (Java Edition only) increases the damage dealt to additional mobs caught in a sword's sweep attack. Sweep attacks happen automatically in Java Edition when your attack is sufficiently charged and you're on the ground, either standing still or moving slowly enough. This is a significant crowd-clearing boost in Java Edition and doesn't exist in Bedrock at all.
  • Knockback pushes mobs away on hit. Useful for keeping hostile mobs at a safe distance or pushing them into the void or in lava. Some players prefer Knockback I over II because  too powerful of a knockback can make follow-up hits harder in close combat.
  • Curse of Vanishing makes the sword disappear permanently on death instead of dropping on the ground. Avoid this on any sword you care about.

For a sword you'll use every day in survival, aim for:

  • Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, Mending – the core enchantments for a general survival sword.
  • Optionally, you can add Fire Aspect II for the burn damage and cooking convenience, and Sweeping Edge III if you're on Java Edition. Knockback is optional and comes down to personal preference.
  • For an undead specialist – wither skeleton farms, skeleton grinders, Wither preparation – swap Sharpness for Smite V. The damage difference against undead is substantial enough to be worth keeping a second dedicated sword for that purpose.

How to Actually Get These Enchantments

The enchanting table gives you random sword enchantment choices at level 30 with a full 15-bookshelf setup, but it will not give every enchantment you may want.

For targeted books – especially Mending – trading with librarian villagers, fishing, or finding enchanted books in loot chests is usually the better route. For expensive combinations like Sharpness V and Mending, trading with librarians is the most reliable option – find a librarian, lock in a trade, then set up more librarians if you need specific books.

When combining books with an anvil, apply them in an efficient order. The "Too Expensive" cap at level 40 applies to individual operations, not the total. Combining two books together first before applying them to the sword is cheaper than applying books one at a time.

Mods That Expand Sword Enchantments and Weapon Building

Vanilla sword enchantments are enough for most survival worlds, but some players eventually want more variety than the usual enchantment setup. The mods below expand sword combat in different ways – some add new weapon types, some change how weapons are built, and one adds extra enchantments for players who want more combat options beyond vanilla.

Spartan Weaponry

Spartan Weaponry Mod

“Spartan Weaponry” adds a full arsenal of combat options rather than focusing only on the vanilla sword. It includes sword-like weapons such as longswords, greatswords, katanas, sabers, and rapiers, along with polearms, blunt weapons, throwing weapons, bows, crossbows, and other combat tools. Most weapons can be made from the five vanilla tool materials, so the mod still fits naturally into normal Minecraft progression. Each weapon type has its own traits that change how it feels in combat. Some weapons have longer reach, some can sweep multiple targets, some can be thrown, and others reward specific matchups such as fighting unarmored enemies, undead mobs, or shield users. Spartan Weaponry is not a direct sword enchantment mod, but it gives players more weapon choices to build around before or alongside their enchanted sword setup.

Simply Swords

Simply Swords Mod

“Simply Swords” adds a wide set of fantasy-style weapons, but the sword-like options are the most useful for this article. Katanas, rapiers, glaives, greathammers, greataxes, and other melee weapons give players more combat styles than a standard vanilla sword, especially if they want different reach, speed, or weapon feel without building a full custom weapon system. The mod also includes unique weapons and supports several larger modded setups, including built-in support for “Mythic Metals”, “Gobber”, and “LevelZ”. It is a good fit for players who like the idea of enchanted swords but want more weapon variety to choose from before deciding on what to upgrade and enchant.

Tetra

Tetra Mod

“Tetra” turns weapon progression into a modular building system. Instead of only crafting a sword and adding enchantments later, you can modify weapons, tools, shields, and bows through a workbench, swapping or improving different parts over time. Powerful parts and schematics can also be found through exploration, ancient ruins, trade, and barter, which gives the mod a stronger progression loop than a simple equipment upgrade. To get started, craft a mallet, use it on a vanilla crafting table to create a Tetra workbench, then place a compatible weapon or tool inside. The holosphere helps preview module stats, improvements, and material options before you commit to changes.

Tetra also supports regular enchanting, including enchanting modular items through normal enchantment systems or working with specific parts in the Tetra workbench, so it can sit alongside a vanilla sword-enchantment setup rather than replacing it completely.

Tons Of Enchants

Tons Of Enchants Mod

“Tons Of Enchants” adds new enchantments across weapons, tools, armor, and bows, but sword users get several direct combat options. Blessed helps with health regeneration, Feasting restores hunger while attacking, Frostbite weakens targets after repeated hits, Lightning can strike enemies on hit, Webbing traps targets in cobwebs, and XP Sword Master gives a chance for extra experience from sword kills. The mod also includes stronger versions of familiar enchantments, such as Enhanced Sharpness, Enhanced Fire Aspect, Enhanced Handling, and Enhanced Unbreaking. Since some effects are curses or treasure-only enchantments, it is worth checking each one before adding it to a main sword.

How to Install Minecraft Mods

You can install the above mods automatically using the CurseForge app or manually by placing the mod files within your game's mods folder. Both methods allow you to easily add custom features and enhancements into your vanilla Minecraft experience.

Common Issues and Quick Fixes

Sharpness and Smite won't go on the same sword

They're mutually exclusive – you can only have one damage enchantment per sword. The same applies to Bane of Arthropods. Pick one based on what you primarily fight and keep a separate sword for the other situation if needed.

The anvil says "Too Expensive"

The anvil caps individual operations at 40 levels in survival mode. If you're combining multiple books at once, split the process – combine books together in pairs first, then apply the final merged book to the sword. Adding books one at a time to an already-modified sword is the most expensive approach and hits the cap fastest.

Mending isn't repairing my sword

Mending repairs the item by converting XP orbs you pick up. If you have multiple Mending items equipped at once, each orb goes to one of them at random. If a specific sword isn't getting repaired, try unequipping your other Mending gear temporarily so orbs go directly to the sword.

Sweeping Edge isn't available

Sweeping Edge is a Java Edition only enchantment. It doesn't exist in Bedrock and won't appear in any enchanting table or loot chest on Bedrock. If you're on Java and still not seeing it, check that you're using the enchanting table at level 30 with 15 bookshelves – it appears in the table rotation but isn't guaranteed every roll.

My game crashes after adding a new mod

First check that the mod file matches your exact Minecraft version and loader. A Forge file will not work in a Fabric profile, and a mod built for one Minecraft version can fail on another. Then check the mod page for any required dependencies before relaunching.
